Added value for the customer
Management Summary
In order to promote the use of innovative process technologies such as virtual commissioning and robotics, the HAHN Group will be relying on a high-performance infrastructure solution based on Dell PowerEdge and AMD server processors in future. This not only guarantees five times the computing power thanks to the combination of hardware and software. It sets new standards in terms of the development potential and scalability of corporate IT. In the medium term, the concept will be used as a central service at all HAHN Group locations, benefiting numerous customers. Adapted to the high performance pressure, the infrastructure solution paves the way for further technological innovations and the fourth industrial revolution.
"In order to make a value-adding contribution to mechanical engineering as IT, we observe the changes and working methods in development and support our colleagues in building innovative robotics solutions with new, powerful and unprecedented development platforms."
The challenge
Due to the ongoing development of the HAHN Group's portfolio GmbH , new companies from the automation sector are integrated into the group every year. Thanks to its deep understanding of production automation and its application, the HAHN Group is growing at an above-average rate. With intelligent technologies such as "virtual commissioning", the company aims to support its customers even more efficiently on the path to the smart factory. The development of new production lines is simulated and optimized in a virtual environment (development platform). However, this computationally intensive process, which is a unique selling point for the HAHN Group, poses challenges for the company's IT: The performance requirements are increasing exponentially. In addition to the already advanced standardization for the basic infrastructure, the "Virtual Commissioning" project also aims to introduce additional value-adding processes that will benefit the entire group of companies and their customers through centralization. The aim was to build the solution on an advanced IT platform in order to benefit from the existing established administration as well as to be able to scale indefinitely and across locations with high performance. To achieve this goal, the HAHN Group broke new ground with IT-HAUS .
The IT-HAUS solution
Thanks to the long-standing customer relationship, IT-HAUS was familiar with the challenges faced by the automation company. Various approaches for the high-performance development platform were evaluated on the basis of the technical possibilities. The infrastructure experts then developed a holistic solution design, which was developed into a proof of concept and put to the test. The IT management ultimately opted for a hyper-converged solution using Dell PowerEdge servers and AMD server processors in combination with VMware vSphere: Thanks to the long-standing partnership with Dell Technologies, IT-HAUS was able to obtain numerous benefits of the Platinum partnership. The developed solution design was able to achieve five times the performance of other approaches by using second generation AMD-EPYC™ server processors with NVMe's and PCIe 4.0 interface technology. In future, the highly automated cluster can be operated under software control via a central platform. Another advantage is the saving on CPU license costs. This new infrastructure solution paves the way for advanced robotics processes at the HAHN Group and its customers.
