Power-efficient and flexible:

IT-HAUS and Sharp/NEC present sustainable content concept in retail

IT-HAUS GmbH offers complete, customized digital signage solutions from a single source. For example, IT-HAUS GmbH also creates concepts for the digitalization of retail environments, thereby increasing efficiency, saving costs and at the same time ensuring that the customer can market and value a digital signage project as a sustainability initiative. The concept involves the 26 branches of the customer - a car rental company - converting their notices from the current analog paper form to a digital form. To this end, IT-HAUS GmbH used analyses to calculate the current costs and then compared them with current solutions. The following challenges were the reason why the customer agreed to a concept development.

Added value for the customer

Actuality:

Digital displays can be updated in real time so that the information is always up to date.

Environmental friendliness:

Digital displays use fewer resources than printed materials and thus contribute to a smaller ecological footprint.

Cost savings:

Although the initial cost of setting up digital displays can be higher, they can save money in the long run as there are no printing costs and fewer staff are needed to update them.

Flexibility:

Digital displays make it easy to switch between different content, depending on what is relevant at the time.

Efficiency:

It is much more time-saving and efficient to update a digital notice than to change an analog notice manually.

Centralized control:

A centrally controlled digital billboard makes it possible to manage multiple displays from one location, improving the consistency and efficiency of communication.

Better visibility:

Digital ads are often brighter and more eye-catching than analog ads, which can help increase audience attention.

Measurability:

With digital displays, it is possible to track exactly when which content was displayed, without having to be present on site.

Project environment

For several years now, IT-HAUS and Sharp/NEC have been cooperating to offer customers in various industries comprehensive digital display solutions. Together, the IT system house and the display manufacturer have a broad range of expertise in the world of digital signage. Together, the close partnership means that the requirements of large customers in the demanding premium fashion retail market in particular can be fully met and satisfied. While the manufacturer Sharp/NEC is involved in the concept with innovative products, IT-HAUS is responsible for the conceptual development, commercial processing, installation and communication with the customer.
New on the market is the ePaper from Sharp/NEC, which requires no electricity for content playback and only minimal energy for updating the content. It is the ideal alternative to paper posters, but is much more sustainable, as you no longer need a new printout if the content changes.
This is the first time the customer has looked at the issue of digitizing posters. He is primarily concerned that the costs for the purchase and operation of the signage are higher than the costs for personnel and the production of the printed products and that he therefore has no commercially noticeable added value from the purchase of a digital signage solution such as the ePaper.
By calculating the TCO (Total Cost Of Ownership), the customer can gain an insight into the monetary benefits of the operation compared to the current activity. Other positive aspects that cannot be measured directly in monetary terms should also be listed and compared.
Currently, the notices are produced centrally in the form of posters (a mix of A4 and A3) and then sent to the respective branches by post. These are then hung up by hand by an employee with a delay of up to one week. The employee needs around 30 minutes per change of campaign and to update the terms and conditions on display. Some of the posters are positioned in light boxes. These can remain in place for the concept. The customer has signaled that the light boxes can be dismantled by the customer himself if the concept no longer includes them. The customer updated the content of the notices twice a month on average. The notices currently consist of 2x A4 and 2x A3 per location.

Project success

A key advantage of the TCO approach is that it gives companies a comprehensive perspective on costs. Instead of focusing solely on the purchase price, TCO takes into account all expenses over the entire life cycle of a product or service. This holistic approach allows companies to identify hidden costs, such as maintenance and repair costs, energy consumption or training for employees.
It was therefore possible to calculate that the purchase would pay for itself after less than six years of operation with a printout rotation time of 14 days. If the notices are changed weekly, amortization can be considered realistic at just under 3.5 years. There is no need for any documentation at all, as this can be generated automatically via the content management system. In addition, any failures can be detected remotely and devices can be replaced or repaired in a targeted manner.
In addition, the customer benefits from the above-mentioned advantages compared to posting on paper.
The customer was convinced by the comparison of costs and benefits of using the Sharp/NEC ePaper displays. A proof of concept and the subsequent rollout phase are to be planned.
