Deutsche Reihenhaus develops and builds high-quality, well-designed residential parks. The Cologne-based company uses them to create livable living space at attractive house prices, even in inner-city areas - and makes a significant contribution to sustainable land revitalization. To date, more than 10,000 families have found a new home in around 300 residential parks across Germany. The 200-strong Deutsche Reihenhaus team builds around 750 new residential units every year. Project environment
One of the biggest challenges for IT at Deutsche Reihenhaus AG is the transformation from a traditional IT structure to an agile IT infrastructure that optimizes and supports business processes. Heterogeneous server, network and storage components have made this difficult to date, and administration has been demanding and time-consuming. This was particularly true for the headquarters in Cologne, which is accessed by several locations and numerous users working from home: around half of the approximately 200 employees of Deutsche Reihenhaus AG work at the headquarters. The company network was already operating at the limits of its capacity, resulting in performance and stability problems. In addition, the previous structure offered no possibility for compliant expansion and scalability. The managers therefore asked for a concept for restructuring the data center. On the one hand, this was to ensure that future capacity and performance requirements could be met, and on the other, to simplify and consolidate the environment.
Project success
In 2018, IT-HAUS GmbH was awarded the highest national Dell EMC partner status, making it one of an exclusive circle of around 15 "Titanium" partners in Germany. To explore the options for a cost-efficient expansion of the existing data center, IT-HAUS used Live Optics. The software creates a detailed analysis of the server computing loads and capacity requirements, which IT-HAUS then used to design a configuration tailored to the customer's needs. The sizing of the hardware was based on a life cycle of five years and the data growth forecast for this period. IT-HAUS was able to convince those responsible with a solution that is particularly easy to administer. This combines computer and storage resources into a scalable cluster, which is provided and operated via a central graphical user interface.
Hardware
The decision for the hardware was made in favor of DELL EMC VxRail Nodes due to the high flexibility of the system. VxRail is the only fully integrated, pre-configured and pre-tested hyperconverged system with VMware vSAN on the market. DELL EMC ToR switches with 10G connectivity are used to support demanding applications and workloads, combined with HPE Aruba Campus access switches for up to 960 Gbps routing/switching capacity. The Synology RackStation serves as a reliable backup solution.
Twelve 8TB Western Digital hard disks are used for seamless integration and robust data security in heavy-duty NAS environments.
Software
The operating system continues to be Microsoft Windows Server and has been upgraded to the 2019 version. This brings advantages in the area of hybrid functions and multi-level security for an unprecedented hyper-converged data center.
Data center
Fast and reliable backup and recovery of workloads is handled centrally via Veeam Backup Essentials with a central management console.
