Added value for the customer
Management Summary
The transformation of the IT infrastructure to an Azure stack-based hyperconverged solution has resulted in savings for JOST-Werke Deutschland GmbH on various levels. The most noticeable is the time saved thanks to the high degree of automation. The customer has time again to focus on its core business and continuously develop its IT. In the medium term, the concept is to be transferred to other international company locations, with administration being carried out via one and the same interface. This means that nothing stands in the way of automated and highly intelligent production in line with Industry 4.0 standards.
"By transforming our IT infrastructure into a hyper-converged and high-performance solution, we have developed a new standard that meets the needs of our growing company. We are ideally positioned in terms of performance, even during workload peaks, and save a lot of license costs."
The challenge
In mid-2020, JOST realized that the heterogeneous servers and storage components had reached the "end of life". A planned introduction of Industry 4.0 components, such as an autonomous loading and logistics system, would be unthinkable with the existing environment. In addition, further scalability of the existing infrastructure would only have been possible at the expense of security and high costs. The company was therefore looking for an innovative infrastructure solution for its headquarters in
Neu-Isenburg, but also at an international level, which meets the requirements of a growing company in terms of stability and performance and can be measured against cost efficiency criteria at the same time. All capacity and performance requirements were to be covered in the future. There was also a requirement for management and administration to be simple and easily scalable. Gradually, the outdated infrastructure at other locations was to be consolidated, standardized and replaced by a new, high-performance infrastructure.
The IT-HAUS solution
IT-HAUS has been a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Gold Partner for over a decade, making it one of an exclusive circle of premium partners in Germany. IT-HAUS also holds Gold Partner status with Microsoft and therefore has access to numerous opportunities and conditions in the Microsoft cosmos. The conversion of the desktop PC and laptop fleet to AMD processors and the associated positive experiences made it an obvious choice to also convert the new server landscape to innovative, high-performance AMD EPYC™ processors. After discussing all the alternative options for renewing the data center and the requirements for the data center, the decision was made in favour of a modern hyperconverged infrastructure based on Microsoft Azure Stack. This combines compute and storage resources into a scalable cluster that is highly automated and software-controlled. This design offers maximum scalability and a massive reduction in operating costs, in combination with NVMe's with PCIe® 4.0 on the latest AMD platform, this results in maximum performance gains. Within a few days, IT-HAUS configured a customized solution design and blueprints for cost-efficient data center renewal with the aim of reducing costs and improving performance. The hardware sizing was standardized for small, medium and large sites and based on a five-year life cycle and the data growth forecast for this period. The highest standards of security and performance were applied to enable IoT components. The advantage of the combination of Azure Stack with HPE servers lies in the simple scaling when expanding the IT locations, the demand-optimized performance increase and simple provisioning. The highly available combination of HPE ProLiant servers and AMD EPYC™ processors (2nd generation) provides additional features such as enhanced security functions and leading I/O memory bandwidth. JOST-Werke Deutschland GmbH also benefits from a total cost of ownership saving of around 50% on the world's most powerful x86 CPUs. As with its technological business area and IT infrastructure, the company is thus demonstrating its proactive approach to innovation and progress.
